If your Shopify store gets traffic but no sales, the cause is almost always one of five things: the wrong traffic, a slow or broken mobile experience, missing trust, costs that appear too late, or shoppers who cannot work out which product is right for them. Check them in that order. The last one is the hardest to see, because a shopper who is unsure leaves without telling you why. Tools that guide the choice — a Smart Store such as BOBBI, a product quiz such as Octane AI, or a sales chat such as Rep AI — address that last cause.
First, rule out a broken store. If shoppers reach checkout but you get no orders at all, place a real test order yourself. A payment provider that is not activated, a market with no payment method, or a checkout app that fails will look exactly like a conversion problem — and no amount of marketing will fix it.
| What you see | Likely cause | How to check | What to do | Tools that help |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Many sessions, almost no add-to-cart, very short visits | Low-intent or bot traffic | Shopify Analytics: sessions by referrer and location | Tighten ad targeting; judge each source by revenue per session | Shopify Analytics, Google Analytics 4 |
| Mobile visitors leave within seconds | Slow or broken mobile product pages | PageSpeed Insights on a product page; test on a real phone | Compress images, remove unused apps, fix layout shifts | PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse |
| Visitors browse but never add to cart | Missing trust: no reviews, unclear returns, unknown brand | Read your product page as a first-time visitor | Add reviews, clear return policy, contact details, real photos | Loox, Yotpo Product Reviews |
| Add-to-cart happens, checkout is abandoned | Surprise shipping cost or delivery time | Shopify Analytics conversion funnel: added to cart, reached checkout, converted; go through your own checkout | Show shipping cost and delivery date on the product page | Shopify shipping and delivery settings |
| Checkouts reached, zero orders, or ads show no conversions | Broken payments, markets or tracking | Place a real test order; check payment and pixel settings | Fix the setup before spending more on traffic | A real test order; Shopify payment settings |
| Many product views per visit, then they leave | Shoppers cannot decide which product is right | Product views per session; searches with no results in Shopify Analytics | Help them choose: comparisons, fit guidance, a way to ask and get an answer | Shopify Search & Discovery (filters), BOBBI Smart Store (conversational shopping), RevenueHunt or Octane AI (quiz), Shopify Inbox or Rep AI (chat) |
Analytics tells you where shoppers left, not what they were unsure about. In a physical shop you would hear the question — "is this the right size?", "which one is better for a beginner?", "will it arrive before Friday?" — and answer it. Online, the same shopper opens five product pages, cannot tell them apart, and leaves.
This is most common in stores with many similar products, technical or spec-heavy products, and higher prices, where a wrong choice feels expensive. Merchants selling laptops, furniture, skincare or sports equipment often see healthy traffic and product views but a low add-to-cart rate for exactly this reason.
Cheap and effective for a handful of products. They answer the questions you expected, not the one a particular shopper has.
Shopify's free Search & Discovery app adds filters, search synonyms and product recommendations. Best for shoppers who know the attribute they want; it does not help a shopper who is unsure what they need.
Shopify Inbox (Shopify's own chat, now with an AI sales associate) and sales chat apps such as Rep AI answer the question a shopper asks. Most unsure shoppers never open the chat bubble, so chat works best alongside guidance on the page.
Good when a few fixed questions decide the match, with apps such as RevenueHunt, Quiz Kit or Octane AI. The path is scripted, so it cannot follow up on an answer it did not expect.
A Smart Store like BOBBI turns the store itself into the conversation: shoppers find the right product by chatting and tapping simple choices, the relevant products stay in view, and checkout happens in your normal Shopify checkout. The questions shoppers ask also show you what they were unsure about. It does not fix slow pages, poor traffic or a broken checkout — fix those first.
Conversion rate alone can mislead: a popup can raise sign-ups while revenue stays flat, and cheaper traffic can lower conversion while revenue grows. Revenue per session combines conversion rate and average order value, so it shows whether a change actually earned more from the same visitors. Track it per traffic source.
Usually one of five causes: the traffic is low-intent or bots, the store is slow or broken on mobile, shoppers do not trust it yet, shipping costs or delivery dates appear too late, or shoppers cannot work out which product is right for them. If checkouts are reached but no orders arrive at all, test payments and tracking first — that is a setup problem, not a persuasion problem.
The most common reasons are costs or delivery times that only appear at checkout, a missing payment method, and doubt about whether the product is right. On high-ticket products, add to cart is often research rather than commitment: the shopper is saving the item while they compare.
It varies widely by category, price and traffic source, so compare against your own history rather than a single benchmark. As one reference, Ethercycle's 2026 study of 10 established Shopify stores reported a 1.45% average conversion rate across 94 million sessions. Also track revenue per session, which captures both conversion and order value.
It can be. Very short sessions, traffic from unexpected countries and spikes after broad ad campaigns point to low-intent or automated visits. Check sessions by referrer and location in Shopify Analytics and judge each source by revenue per session, not by visit count.
A support chatbot helps with questions about orders, shipping and returns. It rarely fixes low conversion on its own, because the shopper who is unsure which product to choose seldom opens a chat bubble. What helps is guiding the choice itself — for example a Smart Store such as BOBBI, where shoppers find the right product by chatting and tapping simple choices. Fix traffic quality, speed and checkout problems first.
It depends on how your shoppers decide. Shopify's free Search & Discovery app adds filters and search synonyms; product quizzes such as RevenueHunt, Quiz Kit and Octane AI ask a few fixed questions; Shopify Inbox and Rep AI answer questions in chat; and BOBBI Smart Store turns the store into a conversation where shoppers find the right product by chatting and tapping simple choices. Fix slow pages, poor traffic and checkout problems first, because no choosing tool can solve those.
